The guidelines help employers and employees in different countries to understand what kind of social insurance contributions need to be paid to Finland for work done in Finland, and where these contributions are handled. The guidelines are available in English, Italian, French, German, Russian, Estonian, Finnish, Swedish and now also in Spanish. They are in pdf format.

Following local customs

In Finland, employers must pay the social insurance contributions of their employees. This applies regardless of the employee’s or the employer’s nationality. The employer must pay both the employee’s and the employer’s share of the social insurance contributions and keep the employee’s share from the salary.

In Finland, the social insurance contributions that are set by law are earnings-related pension insurance, workers’ compensation insurance, unemployment insurance, social security and health insurance contributions.

“Even in the EU, social insurance contributions are different, and they are managed in different ways and for different people, depending on the country. So, it’s really useful to have clear guidelines on Finnish social insurance contributions in different languages, which employees and employers have been happy about”, says Special Adviser Marjaana Lundqvist from the Finnish Centre for Pensions.

Guidelines are useful, for example, when employers hire employees from abroad to work in Finland or when a Finnish employee looks into what obligations there are related to Finnish social insurance contributions on behalf of a foreign employer.
