Average monthly pension in Finland in 2024: €2,100

The average monthly pension for Finns continued to grow last year. In 2024, earnings-related pensions and pensions paid by Kela amounted to 39.1 billion euros.
In 2024, the average monthly pension of Finns was 2,100 euros (1,977 in 2023). The median pension was 1,848 euros per month. These data stem from recent statistics of the Finnish Centre for Pensions and Kela.
In 2024, the average monthly pension of men was 2,349 euros. For women, it was 1,893 euros. Half of the men received a pension that exceeded the average monthly pension for Finns. One in three women received a higher pension.
In 2024, a monthly total pension of more than 3,000 euros was paid to 15 per cent of the pension recipients. One in five men and one in ten women received such a large pension. “There are still a lot of small pensions. About one in three pensioners received less than 1,500 euros per month last year”, says Statistics Planner Joonas Hautamäki from the Finnish Centre for Pensions.

One third more pensioners than at the start of the millennium
The total number of pensioners has increased considerably in recent decades. In 2024, 1.6 million pensioners lived in Finland, about one third more than at the beginning of the millennium.
“In the same period, the population share of pensioners has also increased considerably. In 2000, 28 per cent of the population aged 16 or over received a pension. In 2024, the share was well over 33 per cent, Hautamäki explains.
In 25 per cent of Finland’s municipalities, pensioners account for more than half of the population aged 16 and over.
Earnings-related pensions and pensions paid by Kela totalled 39.1 billion euros in 2024
In 2024, earnings-related pensions and pension paid by Kela amounted to 39.1 billion euros. Earnings-related pension providers paid out 36.4 billion euros in earnings-related pensions. Kela paid national and guarantee pensions to the amount of 2.7 billion euros.
Old-age pensions accounted for 87 per cent of pension expenditure. Disability pensions accounted for 7 per cent and survivors’ pensions for 5 per cent of the total pension expenditure in Finland in 2024.
What does the average pension depict?
The average pension depicts the average total pension of recipients residing in Finland. The pension benefits included are the earnings-related pension, the national pension, special pensions comparable to them and the guarantee pension that the recipient receives.
The data exclude persons who get a partial old-age pension or only a survivors’ pension.
The pension income is in gross amounts.
The data are based on joint statistics of the Finnish Centre for Pensions and Kela.
