How to claim an earnings-related pension from Finland when you live abroad

When you are about to claim a pension from Finland, keep the following in mind.

  • You can claim an earnings-related pension from Finland regardless of the country in which you live. Send in your claim either to the pension authority in the country you live in or claim your pension directly from Finland. The course of the claim process is affected by the country in which you live.
  • Wait for the pension decision patiently. It will be delivered to you at the address you stated in your pension claim.
  • It may take longer to process a pension claim for a person living abroad than for a person living in Finland. This is because the pension authorities in the country where you live usually need to provide more information before the decision can be issued.
  • You get the earnings-related pension you earned in Finland, no matter where you live. Kela can tell you more about how to claim a national pension.

The retirement age in Finland may be different from the retirement age in the country where you live. In other words, you may have to claim your Finnish pension at a different time from the time you claim your pension in the country where you live. You can continue to work in the country where you live even if you claim an old-age pension from Finland.
